Monroe Township is a tranquil suburb located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. It is named after the fifth U.S. President, James Monroe. It was formed on April 9, 1838 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. Over the past six years, this township has seen a significant increase in population and as of 2007 census estimates, had 34,907 residents.
In its early years, Monroe subsisted mainly from agriculture and this was the Townships mainstay until the mid 1900s. These days, Monroe has become more of a bedroom community for nearby New York City. There are also a good number of active adult and retirement communities in Monroe Township.
Monroe Township is an affluent community with median home prices of approximately $457,000. The median household income is $62,578. The cost of living is about 25% higher in Monroe Township than the rest of the U.S., however, public services are better and schools here spend an average of $8,657 per student compared with the national average of $6,058. The student/teacher ratio in Monroe is 15:1. Monroe enjoys a lower-than average unemployment rate of 3.80% (U.S. average, 4.60%) and though current job growth is -0.37%, projected growth over the next ten years is 15.22%.
