During the Civil War, more than 200,000 tons of supplies were transported between New York and Philadelphia via the 22-mile long Delaware & RaritanCanal. This canal not only helped the north during the civil war, but also was beneficial to the economy of Franklin from 1834 until the coming of the railroads. The opening of the Millstone and New Brunswick Railroad in 1854 provided a better transportation infrastructure for this area and further helped Franklins economic growth and prosperity.
Since those agricultural beginnings, Franklin has prospered due to its people and their respect for family and community.Although its economy is now based focused more on manufacturing and services, its population is still one of many backgrounds and cultures working for a better way of life.Residents in Franklin comprise a true melting pot of cultures and this townships success is testament to the benefits of a multicultural community.
