New Brunswick is a township located on the banks of the Raritan River approximately 6 miles southwest of Edison in Middlesex County, New Jersey. Other nearby cities include Hillsborough, Franklin Township, Metuchen, North Brunswick, Old Bridge, Piscataway and South Brunswick. The estimated population of New Brunswick as of 2000 was 36,287 residents
New Brunswick was formed by royal charter in 1730 and first incorporated as a town in 1736. Eventually this community became known as hub city, due to its strategic location between New York and Pennsylvania. The city thrived in this way until Robert W. and James W. Johnson established their would-be famous adhesive tape and gauze manufacturing plant. For Johnson&Johnsons the rest is history, for the city, this meant an important change in its economic sector. Today the main propellers of this citys economy are research, business and industry.
Since 1975, the nearby townships of North and South Brunswick along with New Brunswick have been changing their images so to speak by revitalization and redevelopment programs sponsored by Rutgers University, Johnson&Johnsons and local government. The New Brunswick Development company (DevCo) is the coordinating body of this $1.6 billion project to revitalize the city center and redevelop blighted neighborhoods.
New Brunswick, along with North Brunswick, South Brunswick, Edison, Franklin Township, Old Bridge, Hillsborough, Metuchen and Piscataway are all very good choices of places to live and raise a family.
