Welcome to Metuchen

Metuchen is a Borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey.  Metuchen was part of Woodbridge Township, in 1688 the name Metuchen first appeared and it was derived from an Indian chief name Metuchen.  In 1705 the Main Street was constructed, then in 1717 and 1730 the meeting house was constructed for weekly meeting to be held in .  As Metuchen grew so did its population, but it was not until the beginning of the railroad era that Metuchen saw its biggest residential and developmental stages. In the second half of the 19th Century Metuchen became much diversified in social, culture and religion. In the year 1882 School #15 had 256 pupils and by 1885 the New Jersey Gazette was listing 37 different businesses.    The biggest change to affect Metuchen was the automobile.  The service stations were built and the construction of Route 1 began.  You will find a variety of styles in homes from, Georgian Federal style and Victorian homes.   Today you will still find this historic character in the style of homes as well as a friendly small town atmosphere.  Today Metuchen is much as it was back in the day except for some moderate amount of industrial development.  Today you can walk or jog down beautiful street lined roads, shop in boutiques on Main Street, play with your children in one of the many playgrounds or parks.  Metuchen offers many annual events such as parades, arts and crafts festivals and the County fair.
